A distinctive feature of the Piano Sonata is the combination of the architectural principles of classical sonata form with an improvisatory impulse, expressed through a “dialogue of styles” that undergoes varied transformations as the musical texture unfolds and the musical whole takes shape. The central dramatic principle of the work is the juxtaposition of two polar spheres, marked by the composer’s indications leggiero and marcatissimo. This contrast becomes the impulse for the transformation of the material’s genres and textures, culminating in the fugato section.
