For a long time, I have been concerned about humanity’s relationship with the Earth. Issues such as the Great Pacific garbage patch, air and water pollution, and deforestation reveal the fragility of the environment that sustains human life. These concerns became the starting point for GRETA, a fixed-media composition exploring ecological anxiety and the transformation of natural sound environments.
The piece uses excerpts from Greta Thunberg’s speech at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York as one of its primary sources. Her address became a powerful symbol of the contemporary environmental movement and served as an emotional catalyst for the composition. The work also incorporates fragments of speeches by Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Harrison Ford, and Prince Charles, creating a dialogue between different generations of environmental voices.
In GRETA, I explore the contrast between natural soundscapes and artificial sonic materials. Elements suggesting calm and quiet environments are gradually disrupted and transformed, eventually leading toward a sound world resembling a lifeless, altered landscape.
