Alexey Logunov’s artistic practice explores life in an increasingly crowded and digitized world and the search for a renewed sense of belonging. Reflecting these themes, he creates immersive soundscapes characterized by dense textures, complex timbral environments, and the integration of acoustic and electronic media. His work investigates cross-genre relationships between contemporary classical music, progressive rock, and improvisatory practices, with a particular interest in the expressive potential of electric instruments and electronics. In his recent works, Logunov draws inspiration from the fluidity of improvised performance, particularly the flexibility of melodic lines and rhythm, translating these qualities into structured musical forms.
Logunov’s music has been presented internationally at festivals and conferences including the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), Bang on a Can LOUD Weekend, RED NOTE New Music Festival, SEAMUS, MISE-EN, and Performing Media Festival. His compositions have been performed by ensembles and orchestras including the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Indiana University Concert Symphony Orchestra, Indiana University Concert Wind Band, Indiana University New Music Ensemble, Krasnoyarsk Academic Symphony Orchestra, Yaroslavl Academic Governor’s Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra 1703, Tempora Orchestra, Unheard-of//Ensemble, C Barré, and others. Selected works are published by BabelScores. Recent highlights include the 2023 Georgina Joshi Composition Commission at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a nomination for the 2024 American Academy of Arts and Letters Music Award, performances at the 2025 RED NOTE New Music Festival, and presentation at ICMC 2025 in Boston. As a pianist and keyboardist, Logunov has performed contemporary repertoire and collaborated with composers and improvisers, including a 2025 Midwest tour with composer, guitarist, and improviser Jessica Ackerley. His performing experience also includes serving as a keyboardist in Indiana University Musical Theatre pit orchestra productions. From 2022–2024, he performed as a member of the Indiana University New Music Ensemble under the direction of David Dzubay.
In 2025, Logunov co-founded Overtuned Fest and serves as its co-artistic director. The interdisciplinary festival explores connections between contemporary classical music, experimental rock, and electronic music, creating a platform for collaboration among composers, performers, and artists working across diverse musical practices. The inaugural edition was held in 2026, with the second edition scheduled for 2027.

Born in Leningrad, Russia, Alexey Logunov graduated in 2014 from the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, where he studied composition with Vladimir Tsitovich and Gennady Banshchikov and later served as assistant to Sergei Slonimsky. From 2016–2018, he studied piano performance with Ekaterina Murina. He earned his Master of Music degree in Composition from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in 2020, studying with P. Q. Phan, Eugene O’Brien, and Tansy Davies, while continuing piano studies with Roberto Plano. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music degree in Composition at Jacobs, where he studies composition with P. Q. Phan, David Dzubay, and Aaron Travers, as well as electronic music with John Gibson and Chi Wang. During his doctoral studies, he completed a piano minor with Gregory Sioles and Sofia Gulyak. He is also pursuing a Performer Diploma in Piano at Jacobs, continuing his artistic development as both composer and pianist.
As an educator, Logunov has more than fifteen years of teaching experience, beginning in 2010 with his work at music schools in Russia. He has also been involved with the Jacobs Composition Academy, serving as Administrative Assistant and later as Assistant Director, where he contributed to the development and organization of educational programs for young composers. At the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he served as Associate Instructor in Composition (2022–2024) and has been appointed Associate Instructor in Music Theory for the 2026–2027 academic year.
